Three military helmets hang over the tables at Career. They are of the type which until recently has been used by Danish soldiers in Afghanistan. Wires go through the top of the helmets and from the place where previously was the head of a Danish soldier now beams a 40 watt bulb spreading light out over the guests.
John Kørner is not afraid of problems, on the contrary. He has in nearly ten years studied problems such as aesthetic and conceptual pivot in his paintings, sculptures and performances. To John Kørner problems are issues that art present to the world and to itself. They take the form of blobs, squiggles, colors or shapes. Common to them is that they are easy to spot but difficult to resolve in a simple and unambiguous way.
So it is with wars. In 2008 Kørner painted 16 paintings about a tragedy, namely the 16 Danish soldiers, who at the time were lost in the Danish military commitment in Afghanistan. There was one image per soldier, but the pictures were not portraits of individual soldiers, and had nothing to do with the specific circumstances surrounding these soldiers’ deaths. Since then, Kørner has not let go the issue of Afghanistan. Denmark is with NATOs mandate still at war in Afghanistan and Danish soldiers struggle to solve several problems in the country. And it is not easy.
Over the tables at Karriere light shines from these helmets. You cannot miss them! Whether we want war or not, it joins us at dinner creating a situation with a problem we all have to solve.
